Munchpump chosen for Water Treatment Works

A biological sewage treatment works in the U.K. has chosen a Munchpump to effectively remove sludge from the primary sedimentation tank for further treatment at the site's sludge handling and treatment facility.

The Mono Munchpumps, comprising low speed, high torque parallel shaft grinders, coupled with progressing cavity pumps are installed in the auto-desludge system on the primary settlement tanks.  Approximately 1713m3/h/day of primary sludge with 1% D.S. is removed from the bottom of the tanks, macerated to prevent blockages and pumped at a pressure of 2 bar to the sludge thickening tank.

The Munchpumps are operated to pre-set 'run and dwell' parameters which can be adjusted by the operators to meet prevailing site conditions, and are also influenced by high sludge blanket levels in the sludge thickening tanks.  The combination of the Muncher and a progressing cavity pump, give all the savings of small bore discharge pipework with the added benefit of low running speeds, reducing wear and maintenance costs.
